Fastening Systems

Which mounting system is right for me?

The fastening system you choose is dependent on other selections you make during the process of designing a grille. Choosing a fastening system is an action you take in Step #7 of the process. When you arrive at Step #7 click the appropriate help icon to review which fastening system is right for you.

What is a Slide Pin (SP)?

A slide pin is a flat piece of plastic with a 1/2 inch pin protruding from one side. Slide pins travel in channels cut into the ends of each exposed grille bar. Using the thumb and index finger to grip the fastener, one slides these pins into the window casing thus securing the grille to the window opening.

Top

What is Dual Lock?

Dual Lock, a 3M® product, is a low profile and transparent pressure sensitive adhesive fastener that functions in much the same way as Velcro. One small footprint of this material applied at the ends of each grille bar marries up with a counterpart which is affixed directly to the surface of the glass right at the point where the glass meets the frame. Dual lock does a great job of securing the grille to the window opening without requiring any pins or clips that may damage the window casing. In addition, Dual Lock causes the grille unit to sit approximately 1/16th of an inch off the surface of the glass thus preventing any condensation build up on the surface of the glass from making contact with the wood window grille. Individually, Dual Lock tabs measure 5/8 inch x 1/2 inch.

Top

What are 'Pins and Grommets'?

Pins and grommets is a fastening system that can only be used when the grille type selected has a full-surround frame. The surround is fabricated with pre-drilled holes to accept the pins which fit through the holes to joint the grommets which are tapped into the window casing.

Top

What are 'Concealed Clips'?

Concealed clips insert between the glass and the window casing and reveal a tension mount clip designed to receive the exposed ends of the grille bars in the case of non-surround grilles, and the surround profile in the case of full-surround grilles. The clips are completely concealed from view once the grille is installed. NOTE: Concealed clips only work with certain grille bar sizes and different size clips are used depending on the grille type chosen. See the help file in Step #7 for more information on choosing the concealed clip that's right for you.

Process

What if my grilles intersect one or more window locks?

When designing grilles for single hung, double hung and slider windows, Big Blue automatically asks you to provide information about the location and size of your window lock devices. Whenever a grille bar or surrounding profile frame intersects a window lock, Big Blue will automatically notch the material to a standard 1/8th inch depth. Accordingly, the grille bar or surround profile frame will float behind the locking devices.

What is a grille bar profile?

A grille bar profile refers to the sculpted shape and size of the individual slats of wood, or grille bars, that make up the grille unit. Profiles are categorized by width (e.g. the flat side of the grille bar profile that makes contact with the glass). Grille bar profiles come in a variety of widths ranging from 5/8 inch wide up to 1.25 inch wide.

Top

What is a divided lite?

Divided lite refers to the individual panes formed by the intersection of grille bars. Lites can be square, rectangular or diamond shaped.

Top

What is a non-surround grille?

The most popular and least expensive grille type to produce and ship. Generally speaking, non-surround grilles ship knocked-down and are easily assembled by simply laying the components out on a flat surface, placing one small dab of carpenter's glue in each pre-cut dado joint and fitting the grille bars together at the joints to form the desired divided lite pattern. Once the glue sets up (about 30 minutes) - the grille is ready to primed, painted or stained. All non-surround grilles feature exposed ends that are pre-cut at a 900 angle.

Top

What is a full-surround profile?

Full-surround grilles represent a distinct product upgrade as they include an outer frame milled to overlay the window frame at the point where the glass meets the frame. Full surround grilles are factory assembled based on your specific divided lite pattern and must be shipped in specially built packaging to protect the product during transit. Orders calling for full-surround grilles carry a nominal packaging up-charge based on the size and quantity of grilles orders and will cost most to ship.

Top

What is a colonial pattern?

A colonial pattern features divided lites that form either perfect squares or rectangles. The rule of thumb is that when designing a colonial grille pattern you always want the pattern to form perfect squares or rectangles that are taller than they are wide.

Top

What is a diamond pattern?

A diamond pattern features divided lites that form diamonds shapes.

Top

What is a prairie pattern?

A Prairie pattern, also known as a 'Mission Style' pattern is a modified Queen Anne pattern (see Queen Anne) and features a closed four lite insert in the upper half of the center rectangle. When applicable, a diagram of the Prairie pattern is presented in Step #6 of the configuration process.

Top

What is a Queen Anne pattern?

A Queen Anne pattern features four small perfectly square divided lites in each corner with a single large usually rectangular lite in the center portion of the pattern. The corner lite must be a perfect square measuring at least 3" x 3". The actual number of divided lites will vary depending on the window shape chosen. For example, a Queen Anne pattern installed in a casement window opening will feature nine separate lites while the same pattern installed in a single or double hung opening will feature twelve separate lites. When applicable, a diagram of the Queen Anne pattern is presented in Step #6 of the configuration process.
